League of Women Voters of Vigo County

Making Democracy Work

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League works at local, state and national levels; we are a national organization with active groups at the community level.

The League of Women Voters neither supports nor opposes candidates for office at any level of government. At the same time, the League is wholeheartedly political and works to influence policy through advocacy. It is the original grassroots citizen network, directed by the consensus of its members nationwide.

The League of Women Voters of Vigo County is actively engaged in voter education. The Vigo County League hosts candidate forums, co-sponsors the Legislative Crackerbarrels, studies issues such as immigration, juvenile justice and election laws, and conducts voter registration drives.

The Vigo County League is one of more than 800 local Leagues nationwide in 50 state Leagues and Leagues in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.

At the National level, the League is involved lobbying for campaign finance reform, civil liberties, DC voting rights, election administration, ethics and lobbying reform, global climate change and health care reform.

Who can join the League of Women Voters?

Any citizen over 18, male or female, may become a voting member of the League. Joining at any level (local, state or national) automatically confers membership at every level, and with that membership comes opportunities to work on local, regional, state and national program issues.
